A Discord welcome bot with roles and messages

When someone joins, this bot gives them a starter role, posts a welcome card in your welcome channel and sends them a private message. When someone leaves, it posts a short goodbye. It reacts to server events, so it needs a gateway bot on the Paid plan.

Add to my server

What it does

  1. A member joins the server.
  2. The bot gives them the Member role.
  3. It posts the welcome card in #welcome and mentions them.
  4. It sends them a private message pointing them to the welcome channel.
  5. When a member leaves, it posts a goodbye line in #welcome.

Reacting to members joining and leaving needs a bot that stays connected to Discord, which runs on a machine of its own on the Paid plan.

Before you add it

  • A role named Member and a channel named welcome.
  • The Server Members intent turned on for your application in the Discord Developer Portal.
  • The bot's role placed above Member in your role list, so it's allowed to hand it out.

How adding it works

Press Add to my server and Buildcord asks you to sign up or sign in. It then makes a new bot from this template, with every flow already drawn. Paste your Discord bot token, add the bot to your server with the invite link and deploy. Nothing is final: the template is an ordinary bot you can open and change.

What you can change

  • Swap the role and channel names for yours.
  • Edit the card's color, text and footer in the Embeds page.
  • Add a step that points new members to a rules channel or starts a verification button.
  • Delete the goodbye flow if you'd rather not announce departures.

Questions

Why does the welcome bot need the Server Members intent?

Discord only tells a bot when someone joins if the bot has this intent, and it's one of Discord's privileged intents. You switch it on for your application in the Developer Portal. Buildcord's invite link and deploy checks remind you.

Can I use it without the Paid plan?

Not for join messages. The Free plan runs bots that answer slash commands. If you only need a welcome message, a Free alternative is a verification button, which hands out a role when someone presses it.

A command, a reply and a deploy is a working bot. It takes a few minutes.
